With more than 35 years of experience in investment and finance, Fred Strauss is a highly regarded investment manager.
Fred started his career as a chartered accountant in senior finance and treasury roles at blue chip companies, such as Amcom Limited, Frontline Australasia and Sappi Limited. His interest in investing led him to complete the international qualification of Chartered Financial Analyst. He subsequently held senior investment roles in large family offices and medium-sized investment management companies before ultimately establishing his own investment management businesses in 2012.
Fred is a director at Waterways Capital, a company he founded in 2012. Waterways Capital provides a wide range of investment consulting and research services to wealth managers and family offices.
Waterways manages several direct equities portfolios on behalf of wealth managers. One of the managed portfolios, the Watershed International Share SMA, was the winner of the IMAP Managed Account Awards in 2019 as the industry’s best International Share Managed Account (Fred is the portfolio manager of the Watershed International Share SMA).
Fred also established Waterways Funds Management to provide a full range of investment services to wholesale investors. These services include the management of investment portfolios comprising all asset classes (Australian equities, international equities, fixed income, property and alternatives), asset allocation management and risk management.
Fred’s investment philosophy is underpinned by a methodical and analytical approach to investing underpinned by the investment advice of billionaire Warren Buffett.

“I read a lot about investing and my day job definitely follows me into the weekend,” he says. “Anyone can speculate. Making wise investments is harder. You need to invest in very high-quality businesses for the long-term. That is the place I always start from.”
